Week 1 Retrospective

In blog.

What did I complete?

If you consider the official start date was 1/1/2025 (which I do) then this was a short week, but even then I did get a few things accomplished.

I completed the domain purchase for this blog. I was able to get my name and didn't end up with one of those esoteric TLD's.

I setup a git repo for this blog and also set up Pelican, a Python static blog engine, to publish this to Cloudflare pages. Pretty happy with how easy it was to wire everything up and I didn't have to pay anything. I'm a big fan of static websites, setting up a CMS and a database just seems like overkill for 95% of blogs.

I also published a first post, which felt pretty good to be perfectly honest. I don't consider myself much of a writer, mostly just a thinker, so this is a habit and area of improvement I'm excited to tackle.

So the blog is priority two, which means I should show some progress on Priority #1, the business. For that, I have a pretty good idea on what direction I want to take. I'm still in the research phase, pondering the idea, what it might look like, will it provide enough value to generate profit, and is it feasible for me to build, etc.

What's planned for the week ahead?

Since I have a busy family life and a day job, the hours for this business idea (and this blog) are quite limited - just an hour here and there in the evenings sprinkled throughout the week.

This week I want to make some ambitious goals: commit to one business idea and get a landing page setup.

I think that's reasonable. If mid-week I make final go/no-go decision on a business concept, I should be able to setup a domain and get a landing page uploaded in the remaining time.

Having a domain and at least a home page means I can start the plumbing with analytics and dipping my toes in to a potential ad campaign or some other method(s) to validate my idea. I'll need to get traffic from my intended audience to see if any of this makes sense, before I spend the time on actual code.

Misc thoughts

This is low priority, but I want to get a better theme template for this blog. There's a couple things about it I want to fix and adjust, pretty minor overall. I'll live with it for now, since the correct words get displayed on the screen and thats all that matters.

Profit & Loss Statement

  • This blog domain: $10
  • This blog hosting: $0 (Free)
  • This blog misc: $0

I'm just five days in to my venture and I'm operating at a loss, here's to some day reporting a profit!
